48 - Facing Death

Previous session: 47 - Tough Negotiations

The next morning...

When we wake up on our ship, we hear distant fighting sounds, as some districts seem to be at war since last night.
[Perception - Pass ✔] We hear a roar above us, more especially a dragon roar.

Senri
Is that a dragon?
Axel
What's a dragon?
Senri
Uh, think of a big lizard...

The shadow of a dragon passes by, and swoops by the shipyard. It appears as they are in a dogfight against skeleton things.

Senri (pointing)
That would be a dragon!

↪[Perception (follow-up)] Senri notices it's an Emerald dragon.

Senri
I'll add that to my collection.
Persy
You keep collection for that?
Senri
You know, knowing which ones I've seen so far.
Axel
We know that Death Inc. isn't a good company.
Senri
Does such a good thing exists?
Axel
Debatable. But we could help them perhaps?
Persy
We don't know anything about that dragon.
Axel
But we do know how Death Inc. works.

[Nature - Pass ✔] Persy remembers that an Emerald Dragon of that size is not something we want to be close to. However as any dragon, they're easily swayed when it comes to a matter of a coin.

Persy
For all we know, it could be a mercenary for Death Inc...
Axel
I dont think so, because they appear to be fighting them
Persy
Are they?
Axel
It appears they're being followed.
Nesvalyn
Maybe we should focus more on the Bishop honestly, as it would be a waste of time to take a side there.

Finding scrolls of [Nystrul Magic Aura] isn't too hard, and it would cost 150 credits per scroll from what we heard.

We decide to travel with [Wind Walk]. We stop by a Wizard shop and get our scrolls, and then we head to the Mausoleum.
We notice that shit is going down, as we notice different bataillons between Death Inc and Druid Corps fighting in the streets, along civilians fighting each other, it's chaos. We have a rocky ride, but we manage to dodge most of the war and arrive safely.
Finally after what seems to be hours, we reach the edge of Mausoleum, where the main entrance is a plain battlefield. Druids try to push in, and Undeads try to hold it.
We manage to land on a safety place to discuss what is our plan.
Nesvalyn enables the [Psychic Whispers] for 4 hours.
Axel and Persy uses [Alter Self] to pass physically as undead, along using the scroll to pass as Undead for each party member.
We go by on the side and finally reach a side entrance with a vigil, and she's checking our IDs.
She's observing and takes a drag on her cigarette while we morph back to humanoids.

Vigil
That was impressive, wow.
Axel
Thank you.
Persy
Yeah, just some magic items, my friend.
Vigil
You got some papers?

Persy hands the papers we got. She looks at it.

Vigil
Ok, Mister Clouds, you're working for big people, eh? Get in.

Persy takes the papers back and we all get in the platform, we're finally entering the Mausoleum District.

The Mausoleum
...

It's a huge district filled in black, with cathedrals here and there. The streets are mostly emptied and desert, probably because of the war.
We fly through to the Breathforge. During our travel, it seems that the district is abandoned, and even too quiet. We notice a big government kremlin type building, where most of the vessels are entering or leaving. We notice people in uniforms, and next by, the Breathforge. It's a much bigger one than Dertrine with multiple towers, along smaller buildings around.
When floating around, we notice a bataillon of guards in front of the doors, and even if there are a few more entries, they all seem to be guarded.

We land and soldiers raise rifles towards us when we approach.

Soldier
Halt! What are you doing?
Persy
We're in an errand, we need to access to the Breathforge.
Soldier
No one has access except the Forgemaster, but I'm not surprised that civilians don't know
Persy
He sent us on an errand, he didn't mention the lockdown
Axel
We don't get paid enough for this.
Nesvalyn
True.

They ask us to leave, and we leave and regroup further.

Nesvalyn
What's our next step, then?
Axel
Why do we want to get in?
Persy
We need to get soul energy to open the portal, you know?
Axel
Oh, right.
Nesvalyn
Too bad we didn't manage to keep the soul of the manager.
Persy
My new power core runs on it, but I don't think it's powerful enough, and it may kills me so..
Nesvalyn
Let's not do a plan like that, if you don't mind.

Axel goes to scout to find the best entrance for the group.
[Stealth - Pass ✔] Axel finds another vent to go.

We quickly banter about wondering if the Forgemaster is already in, and the worst case scenario. After a while, we go through the vent.
We enter and go in the following order: Axel - Persy - Senri - Nesvalyn - Sabine
We sense some waves, which stops all the magical effects on us.

Nesvalyn
We should have bought more of the scrolls, when I think about it...
Persy
Yeah...
Nesvalyn
And I'm starting to think about a backup plan right away.
Axel
Don't worry, we'll make it through.
Nesvalyn
I know, and as they say...
Axel
...only one way to find out.

After a while and removing the grid to enter the catwalk, it smells like rotten trash. The whole plate is hot and lit. It's filled with trash and garbage.

[Investigation - Pass ✔] Nesvalyn and Persy look around, and notices it's just piles of trash. In the center of the room are many soul crystals. It has a kind of spiral crystals around, with what looks to be crystal flowers.
Nesvalyn looks around more, and wonders about this purple light is from, and find tubes with magenta substance. And by getting closer, and is the same color as Axel, and he realizes at it's a Plasmoid factory.
There aren't any Plasmoids around, but we're in the center of the spherical room.

Nesvalyn
I think that's a Plasmoid Breathforge...
Persy
Ooh...
Axel
I see.

[Insight (Axel)] Axel is feeling a new feeling, like a deep carnal rage within them. Everything feels familiar... It feels like... home?

Axel
I WAS FUCKING MADE HERE. THESE MONSTERS MADE ME. HERE. THEY STOLE ME FROM WHATEVER LIFE I WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE. THEY MADE ME A WEAPON.
Persy
I know how you feel, I've been there.
Axel
NO YOU DON'T! No, you have no idea what I feel. You were an experiment. I was made to be a weapon, a tool, to kill, by these fucking monsters. You were a scientific experiment.
Persy
If you feel passionately, that changes everything. I don't know why I was made, but I get you were hurt. But that's why we're going to kick their ass, you're not what you were created for.
Nesvalyn
And you changed since.
Axel
I want to kill of them, destroy everything. Everything this place is. Everyone of them, for making me!
Nesvalyn
And then what?
Axel
I don't know.
Nesvalyn
Do you really think it's the solution?
Axel
OF COURSE IT'S NOT NESVALYN! I know that, I'm not an idiot. That doesn't make me less angry. I don't want to be a weapon, but it feels it's all I can be.
Persy
Weapons don't get upset, look at you.
Axel
...Thank you Persy.
Nesvalyn
We're here for you, don't forget. And it's good you express that.

[Stealth] Axel, Nesvalyn and Senri moves pretty quietly, but Persy isn't.
We're about 60ft from the Soul Crystal. As we take a few steps forward, the trash is starting to move around us. A tower is about to fall down, but they all start moving, clearing space around us. The trash reassembles near us like a throne.
Sitting at the top is a purple specter person. She leans towards us:

Forge Mistress
WHO DARES ENTERING MY FORGE?
Persy
We're the cleaning crew.
Forge Mistress
I don't need cleaning.
Persy
Obviously...
Forge Mistress
And having that implies guests, and I dislike guests!
Axel
That's a good thing we don't plan to stay long, we just need a few souls.
Forge Mistress
AH AH AH AH. I won't give my soul energy to anyone.
Axel
We can buy some.
Forge Mistress
Don't need any money, I'm made of magic.
Axel
But the trash must come from somewhere, no?
Forge Mistress
I made it, as I'm made of magic.
Axel
Oh ok.
Forge Mistress
How did you get there?
Nesvalyn
The front door?
Forge Mistress
No, I would've known otherwise.
Persy
The top door.
Forge Mistress
You know, they say you're supposed to talk to them, but THEY'RE INFURIATING
But for once, you can talk to people, they're interesting.

They keep going for a dialogue on their own, switching voice and side to simulate two sides.

Axel
I can't believe that one made me...
Persy
I mean, some of us of the academic type are shut in eccentrics.
Axel
Really? Like you, eccentric?
Persy
In the sense of opposite of shut in, thank you.
Axel
Did I do sarcasm properly?
Nesvalyn
Why didn't I shut up back then?
Forge Mistress
Very well, I decided that I would kill you.
Axel
That's unfortunate.
Forge Mistress
Well you came for soul energy, that's a win-win.
Axel
We came for the soul crystal, it would be bad for business if we defeated you.
Forge Mistress
You broken spot of goo, you can't kill me!
Axel
We already killed a forgemaster before.
Forge Mistress
You blew up the Chaps Crystal on Dertrine?
Axel
Yeah.
Forge Mistress
It was the oldest forge running, you'll need a nuclear explosion to take this one down.

Axel is trying to get closer by complimenting them.
[Persuasion] Axel manages to take one step closer.

Forge Mistress
Stop right there, or I'll have you recycle.
Axel
Do you think this will work on me?

Axel takes another step.

Forge Mistress
I don't think I will, but this thing will!
Forge Mistress combat

[DEX Save] Persy takes 38 bludgeoning and is knocked prone, Axel and Senri takes 19 dmg and Axel is knocked prone, Nesvalyn evades fully.

[Round 1]
Senri casts [Slow] and the FM is slowed and has a [Sorrowful Fate], and enables her [Form of Dread], and breaks formation by climbing the trash tower.
Axel stands up, summons their gun, gets on their broom of flying, dashes, "I need you to trust me" uses [Action Surge] and points their gun towards their head, and is about to press the trigger.

The Forge Mistress is trying to stop Axel, and purple goo flies into the air as we hear a gun shot, and the gun explodes immediately, making a nuclear blast with soul energy, with a wall of light flying towards us.
[Acrobatics - Pass ✔] Senri gets closer to Persy and leaps dramatically.
Persy holds the key and we're about to brace the explosion, and Sabine leaps to mitigate the damage, and we're all gone.

Axel is not here with us, and we don't know where we are. There's blackness around, and Sabine is laying on the ground near us, her back fully burned.

The Death Domain
...

It's a familiar darkness for Persy, and we're turning around, to see a massive monolithic structure, like a floating skull, flanked by structures of bones, like a castle wall thing.
Persy is in shock, as he doesn't know what Axel would just do, and being back there adds another layer.

Persy
I had my suspicions, I didn't think it would really be the CEO's room.
Nesvalyn
That's where you were when we were in Nowhere?
Persy
I had a feeling it was related to Death Inc. But they may know Willum so that's something.

This thing floats closer to the group.

Giant Skull
I wasn't expecting visitors.
Persy
I wasn't expecting to arrive like this, sorry for any problem closed.
Giant Skull
Fine, let me tidy up the place.

We notice that nothing changes.

Giant Skull (after an awkward silence)
Forgive me in this attempt of humor.
Nesvalyn
It was pretty funny actually.
Nesvalyn (mentally)
Maybe we should heal Sabine?
Persy (mentally)
Oh fuck right.

Persy tries to cast [Cure Wounds] on Sabine, but nothing happens.

Giant Skull
That isn't the place to do that, tell me, why are you here?
Persy
We're trying to soothe some misunderstanding.
Giant Skull
Well, I am the CEO, I handle the misunderstandings.
Nesvalyn (whispering to Persy)
You were really at the CEO, how?

We decide to be honest, and start to explain that we have a hit, and we're explaining our side, hoping it will soothe up the things.

Death Inc. CEO
Very well. I have decided to remove the black spot on each of you. You would think that agent Erella being unalive for a while would be quite so petty. Forgive me as I'm not involved inside my company, and our customer service slipped. But to make it up to you, I had Erella destroyed, what else can I do to make it up?

Nesvalyn makes a pause and wonders if it's really happening, to the group.

Persy
Well, a friend of ours died in this process, and our ship got destroyed, and after all when...
Nesvalyn (speaking over Persy listing everything)
Aside our friend and the ship, all the casualities that happened on the side.
Death Inc. CEO
I'm a god of Death, not a god of resurrections. But I can give you a ship.
Persy (going on)
And there's a certain Archfey we need to kill...
Death Inc. CEO
Archfey?
Persy
It seems there's a lot of them. They're Or, the Prime of Selkies on Wundera.
Death Inc. CEO
Wundera, that's a name I haven't heard for a long time...

They seem to be lost in their thoughts after saying Wundera.

Nesvalyn (to Persy)
Do you think it's a wonder of Death, or do they come from Wundera?
Persy
I don't know...
Nesvalyn (to the CEO)
When you say Wundera, are you from there?
Death Inc. CEO
Yes, at one point I would’ve been considered a Wunderran, though that was eons ago, back when I was a person. It was a perfectly enjoyable life until it wasn’t; I loved someone, he was wonderful, we were happy, and then I died for the first time. When I awoke, I found that I had become a slave to true madness, and my beloved had gone away.
And so my search began. I wandered endlessly to every corner of the planet; watching, inscribing, learning, all in the name of finding some way to be reunited with him, despite the terrible burden of my unwilling reanimation. I learned all of the secrets of magic that Wundera could offer, delved into the depths of my own psyche, and even dethroned an immortal god, all to no avail.
Until the day I finally met my beloved… only to find he had devoted himself to destroying the very madness that I had succumbed to. In that moment we were just two people; once in love, now on opposite sides of a shadow war that neither of us had ever dreamed. It was his love for me that spared my life; by rights he should’ve destroyed me then.
He instead chose to do what he’d done dozens of times before; erase my memory and disappear into the night. That particular erasure didn’t take, and my search efforts grew exponentially. Eventually I went off world, discovered the breadth of the multiverse, and it was then I finally had a breakthrough. If my love had dedicated his life to destroying me, then I merely had to wait until he died. For millennia, I searched every corner of the Galaxsea to find the answer.
I’ve died and been reborn countless times, I saw the beginning of all things and every moment of time stretched out before me, and every possible reality where time ends completely. I tapped into the soul of all knowledge and the secrets of existence.
I became a god, more powerful than the Wonders could ever hope to be. And with this omnipotence, I finally had a plan. When I devised the plans for the first Breathforge and created the first Soul Crystal, I did so solely with my beloved in mind. If I could catch his soul then he could stay with me forever. But the Astral Sea is a game of coin, and so I built Death Inc to aid my efforts; immortal undeath in exchange for unending service.
In truth, I became the very monster that enslaved me and took my beloved from me all those years ago. If I were still subject to mortal judgments, perhaps I’d feel guilty, but I did it all for love…
I did it all for Willum.
Nesvalyn
Wait, no way... you mean Willum, like Willum Orsinov? And Ludwig as their adoptive son?
Persy
I have his arm on me...
Death Inc. CEO
That's why you seemed familiar, you were his friends.
Persy
Yeah that's us, it's Logarius, right?
Logarius
Another name I haven't heard for millennials.
Senri (to Nesvalyn & Persy)
I don't know who you're talking about.
Logarius
Well, memories for another time, perhaps. But what is this Archfey you mentioned?
Persy
They've kind of being, well...
Nesvalyn
A dick.
Persy
Yeah, causing misfortunes against us.
Logarius
So, just to be clear, you have another great and terrible evil that is pursuing you.
Nesvalyn
It's a good way to sum it up.
Persy
That's why we wanted to clear up with Death Inc first.
Logarius
We don't know who this Or is, I'll check if I can find anything on them.

[Medicine - Pass ✔] Senri is able to stabilize Sabine, but she needs medical attention. This space exists between Life and Death, but she's still holding on.

Logarius
That said Archfey is known by different names, but they often take their public name from their birth name. I looked and found nothing about Or. But, I did find folk tales of a Fey that matches your description about a Kerina.
Persy
Kerina, uh? We really appreciate that piece of knowledge.
Logarius
I'm a God after all. I'll have your new ship at the shipyard, I'm sure these nerds will be able to do the switch. I do hope you wrap this business with this Archfey, as you have a great evil to deal with.
Nesvalyn
What do you mean?
Logarius
Ah, it's for another time.

Main quest added: ✔ A Greater Evil

Logarius
But before you go, someone has something to say.

Logarius opens his jaw, and appearing on the skeleton tongue is Willum, dressed in a confortable clothing, with his arm restored, looking young and happy, without any burden this time.

Willum
I'm happy that I was able to see you all again with your adventures, and I learned from these years of being dead. But I want to know of all you, the best paradise is to spend time with people you love. I can't help hoping you have the same.
Persy
YOUR SON KILLED YOU AND YOU'RE WISE NOW? IT'S OVER CAUSE YOU'RE DEAD?

Willum smiles and leaves.

Nesvalyn (looking away)
He's right... that kiss with Paildreo back at the FCA base, even if it's a painful memory, these few seconds... it felt like it was the best moment I had for decades, and I miss them even more now.
Persy
We got to deal with Or first, so we can get back to our lives.
Nesvalyn
Indeed. Any words for Ludwig? As we will try to take care of him, even if he's able to take care of himself, and even sometimes taking care of us actually.
Logarius
Who's Ludwig? Oh... Yes, the Tiger child. Keep an eye of him. Willum tend to overworry.
Nesvalyn
He always cared for people, that's Willum.
Persy
Tell him to be grateful. I haven't kicked his son's ass.
Logarius
Thank you young Persistance. Every time you need to talk to him, he'll be there. It was lovely to meet you all. Ta ta.

And we're all blinking back into the Breathforge.

Back to Minavra
...

We see Axel(?) seated in a perfect lotus posture pose, with a black chain around their body. In their hand there is a incense burner, but mostly... their color changed from Purple to a White Blue tone.

Nesvalyn
Wait... they're alive?
Persy
Are... are you? You're not Axel right? They died... Hello?

They open their eyes.

Axel?
PERSY!

They jump on Persy.

Axel
IT WORKED!
Nesvalyn
But, uh? Eh?

Persy tries to slap them (but misses).

Persy
YOU THINK YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE PUNCHED IN THE STOMACH? WHAT THE HELL?!
Axel
I didn't know what to expect and it worked!
Nesvalyn
YOU FUCKING SHOT YOURSELF IN THE HEAD!
Axel
And I'm ok!
Nesvalyn (sighing and shaking it off)
If Sabine weren't in immediate danger, trust me on that, I would be the one hitting you. Persy, help me up.

Axel moves to Sabine and heals her for 14 HP.

We can tell the heal worked, and we banter about moving Sabine to safety. Nesvalyn tried to slap Axel, but failed to hit, and Senri observing this, casts [Eldritch Blast], where only one blast hits.

Nesvalyn
IT'S NOT A CONTEST SENRI!
Senri
Oh, sorry.
Axel
Oh, Senri, about you dying not mattering, it wasn't to insult you, I'm sorry for saying that.
Senri
I hope so, I died by your hand twice already.
Nesvalyn (to Persy)
That's not Axel...
Persy
Yeah, they changed, but in a good way.
Axel
I ended the war by the way.
Persy
WHAT?!
Nesvalyn
Are you messing with us? Did you learn sarcasm?
Axel
Let me explain, I did fully died there. But afterwards, I was brought to an extradimensional space or deep inside my soul, and I was confronted by all of my past lives. I was giving a choice with going on with the cycle, to try again and hopefully not picked by a machine, or I could come back and could promise to complete the job to liberate all of my kind.
And when I got back, all of the soul energy from my past incarnations came together and I was a sort of giant Axel avatar, and what shattered the crystal. And in that form, crushed the crystal, went out and ended the war.
I'm happy to say there was no casualties.
Persy & Nesvalyn
Uh?
Axel
I went into some kind of avatar state.
Nesvalyn
That's why they changed...
Persy
I don't believe you.
Axel
Just go outside and you'll see.
Nesvalyn
Let's help Sabine first, we'll see about that later.

As we're flying to the city back to the shipyard, we see an odd scene in the city. Where were was fighting, there are piles of light blue goo instead that has been thrown, which shows scenes that are frozen in time.
After a few hours, we arrive at the shipyard, where our old ship is, with a much larger recent ship next to it.
[Archaeology][History - Pass ✔] Nesvalyn recognizes it as a Wunderran' Giant ship.
Sprigg opens a door of the bigger ship.

Sprigg
I finished to move my chamber, these zombies guys came, moved Naus and said it was ours!
Nesvalyn
RIGHT, IT'S FROM OUR HOME, IT'S A GIANT SHIP. FROM. HOME!
Persy
Wow, it's cool.

✒✅ Quest closed: ✔The Black Dot

When we board on the ship, it's a much bigger ship, Naus makes the rundown of the ship:

  • We all have our individual room.
  • We can navigate using the sails or manually (if we have 60 Giants in our crew).
  • We can have weapons equipped on the ship, but we have none at the moment.
  • It has a bigger hyperdrive reservoir, meaning we can travel for longer.
Persy
I was thinking for the name, what about the Ice Falcon?
Nesvalyn
Is there an idea behind it?
Persy
It's a classic Giant naming convention.
Nesvalyn
You noticed or read that?
Persy
It's a known thing among the scholars.

By saying that, Persy has a doubt on how he knows that, and why he said that.

Persy
I mean it sounds right, doesn't it?
Nesvalyn
You know about Giants' now? Can I ask you something?
Persy
Give it a shot.
Nesvalyn
Does the White Sabretooth clan rings a bell?
Persy
...not sure about that one.
Nesvalyn
Maybe it wasn't a Sabretooth, it's been a while...
Axel
What are we talking about?
Nesvalyn
Nothing, just an old dragonborn ranting and mumbling non sense.
Axel
You're not that old, come on.

We put Sabine in a room to let her recover, and we all shower and rest a bit with what we just witnessed.

We reconvene after a bit. Sprigg asks Naus to get away from Minavra.
Sprigg let us know that while we were "fooling around", he got a contract for 50k credits.
Ludwig pays us 2k credits for his share.

With the new ship, we would be there much faster (in a day or two). Sprigg dictates the coordinates, and Persy enter them.
[Insight] Persy opens up the keypad, pauses, and before realizing, the coordinates are entered by themselves. He doubts but thinks it's what has been said by Sprigg.
Naus takes off, and makes course to the next planet.

On the travel, Axel shares their new abilities, and also shows signs of full spectre of emotions.

Once Sabine is up, they're fine we took her, and is angry towards Axel due to the injuries.

Axel
I'm sorry you got into that. It wasn't my attention to hurt any of you. I'm really gratefully that you partially sacrificed yourself to save my friends. I wanted to end the combat as quickly.
Sabine
I'm glad you have your little epiphany and have found the stuff, but I'm not accepting your apologies. You have some enlightenment, but see what it cost me. I'll never forgive you.
Persy (trying to change the subject)
Hey Sabine, look at my workshop!

Sabine slams the door of her room.

Persy
Yeah she's really angry.

Persy turns invisible and tries to hit Axel, but misses by nothing.

Persy
DAMN IT, TAKE IT! STOP BEING NIMBLE!
Axel
Why are you trying to hit me?
Nesvalyn
You're pretty nimble now, that's true.

Then a banter happens, related to Persy trying to hit Axel and what is a proper punishment, as Persy thinks they deserve to be hit for what they did, but Nesvalyn counter argues that it would be Sabine the best placed, and not us, and it keeps going for a moment, ending up on Nesvalyn trying to hit Persy after he declares we can hit him if he deserves to be hit, but it happens that being physically strong isn't Nesvalyn's best feature.

The travel goes on for 3 days. When we arrive, we're not on a planet nor at a Crystal Sphere. We look out, and we see dozens of ships identical to the one we're on, floating, suspended in space. As we got closer to one of them, we see hanging on the side of the deck are massives skeleton arms.

The party levels up to level 12!
