35 - Assault on the Breathforge

Previous session: 34 - Robots & Capitalism

The next morning...

As we wake up, we notice that the rebels are finishing to prepare to walk to the town. We confirm that we will target the Breathforge first.
They confirm they will start with the Shipyard, then the Scrapwork zone, and then the Breathforge, meaning we should reconvene at the Scrapwork if it goes to plan.
Once the production elements are seized, the Pinnacle will be the last part, and it will force the Area Director to discuss and give what they want.
We start to travel to the town, and because we came with the horses, we will arrive a couple of hours before the main forces.

During the travel, Nesvalyn mentions he noticed that casting without paying makes you a priority target, and we could use that at our advantage.
Along that, Azzy starts to talk about our right to intervene in other people business, and especially the giants, due the morality about killing people, as it seems to vary easily and is aimed mostly towards Nesvalyn and Persy. It is cut down as the duo deems it's not the proper moment to talk about it, but proposes to talk about it next time we're on the SpellJammer.

Gunfight at the Ombar Springs
...

After a few hours, we arrive back in town and give back the mech horses, and we start to apply the plan by heading to the Breathforge.
[Perception - Pass ✔] Balnorin notices there's nobody out compared to yesterday. Senri notices a purplish dot on Balnorin's forehead.
Senri shouts "Move!"
[DEX Save] We were all targeted and got shot (Balnorin takes 20 dmg, Senri takes 30 dmg), the rest of us managed to get out of the way before getting hit, but we are pinned down to our location.
We hear an automated message broadcasting in the area:

Hello, this is an automated broadcast from Astracom security service.
You have been infracted with [UNAUTHORIZED SPELLCASTING].
Please, be prepared to die.
Thank you for choosing Astracom.

As we're sure the ambush is done, we quickly ask why the guns explode, and Azzy shares what they recalled during the combat, aka their gun will self destruct in a big boom.
Azzy oozes their way to Persy, mentions that the guns explode to Persy, and gets back to share his location to the group.
Balnorin morphs out of the wall, rejoin and casts [Enhance Ability (STR)] to help dig up.
While we're extracting Persy, we hear a raid alarm, then an explosion coming from the ship yard, meaning that the Rebels started the assault.
We manage to get Persy out of the building after half an hour, relatively safe, and we take a while to rest a bit and discuss about what we just encountered.
Persy mentions that they were like Azzy, revealing a bit more about their past, and a suggestion that their purpose is to kill people. Azzy shares more about themselves and their resistances for the future encounters, but refuses to fight other Plasmoids in the future.
While we recover, Balnorin casts [Prayer of Healing] to help with the injuries.
Once it's done, we resume our march towards the Breathforge.

The Breathforge
...

We notice that many of the off-worlders are fleeing to the docks, and we don't see many workers on the way.
We finally reach the lift, descending into this dark pit, yet within a dim area.
The Breathforge is a giant dome, displaying some complicated gearwork, with four towers around. It's like they open to this wide disc.
It takes 10 minutes to reach the door, which is seal shut.
We can see the progress of the rebels from a mile away.
[Investigation - Pass ✔] Nesvalyn finds an exhaust vent which can be an entry point.
Persy analyses the smoke and smells really chemically, which makes him tingles a lot.

Persy
Smells like, eh...
Azzy
If it's not good for a robot person, it's probably not good for us.

Persy open the grid with the tools, and suggests to go in as a scout.
Nesvalyn forms a mental link ([Psychic Whispers]) within the whole group for 6 hours, which makes the group react to this new ability.

Persy gets inside then proceeds into a dark catwalk, leading to a drop. Once at the other side, it takes around 20 minutes to cross.
Senri inhales some of this gaz, and it gives her a small euphoria bump. Same for Balnorin, which is considered safe enough to all go in.[1]

Inside the forge
...

Azzy sneaks down until they reach the floor of the forge, and they hear the following voice

???
I know you're here.
Azzy (standing up)
Who I'm talking to?

The neon blue smoke starts swirling and swirling, until a figure raises and screams:

Smoke figure
IT IS I, THE GREAT MAGIC MAN, MASTER OF THE FORGE!

Which makes Azzy unafraid, starts to mention how cool it is, and how the Magic Man worked on it for a while. He then dismisses the smoke, revealing it's a regular looking person, ghostly blue looking humanoid, looking like some kind of genie.

Azzy
It's fantastic to meet you, I'm Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdicar. Should I bring my friends?
Magic Man
Oh, well, sure, bring all the intruders. OH INTRUDERS!

All the lights of the catwalk lit up towards the position of Azzy and the Magic Man, making it easier to regroup the party.

Nesvalyn (mentally)
What's happening Azzy?
Azzy (yelling to the group)
In my defense, when you're spotted, you're spotted.
Persy (yelling)
Who's asking?
Magic Man (speaking loudly)
The Magic Man™!
Persy (normally)
Oh sick.

We all make our way to the figure and regroup.

Azzy
Well sorry for intruding I guess, our bad.
Magic Man
You broke from a vent.
Balnorin
It smelled nice. What fragence do you do?
Magic Man
Technically it's not my fragrence or essence or gas. I AM the gas.
Balnorin
We've been breathing your particules?
Azzy (to the party)
What we were here for already? I entirely forgot why we're here.
Nesvalyn
By the Great Mother...
Persy
For me, I have some personal questions. I'm looking to learn more about the Warforged, and you seem to be the expert around here.

The Magic Man snaps his fingers, and all the lights becomes green. The floor is a bunch of different stations, revealing some kind of an assembly line. Far away from us, stands a blue glowing crystal. And behind that is a giant Warforged, matching the size of the Giants outside.

Persy
That's why it was closed.
Magic Man
Oh yeah, but it's not important. What is important right now...

He goes closer to Persy, then licks his forehead.

Magic Man
Who made you automaton?
Persy
It's kind of conforting to know they're not with you. But it's from our world and they did a different process, and I'm not sure if it's pure knowledge or it's from another world. I don't have a bunch of details unfortunately. I used to be a tiefling, I'm an organic being originally.
Magic Man
Wait, you have a memory from your past life?
Persy
Well yes, why? Is it some kind of death?
Magic Man
You mean to say you were a living being, and transformed to an automaton?
Persy
I mean, as far as I can remember from these a holes, probably. I was kidnapped and this happened.
Magic Man
Remarkable! I've never seen a Warforged created like that!
Persy
I guess I was hoping you would be able to answer, but I'm giving you questions. Anybody disappeared or stolen schematics recently?
Magic Man
You'll have to understand that it's not the only Breathforge. Some do Autognomes, other Warforged and Dwarforged, other are specialized in Plasmoids, like your assassin friend.
Nesvalyn (pointing to Azzy)
Do you have any info from where they're from?
Magic Man
I don't deal with plasmoids.
Azzy
Who knows then?
Magic Man
I don't really, I'm attached to the building.
Persy
Like bound as a ghost?
Magic Man
You see, I am the Forgemaster of the Breathforge, known as Magic Man™. My original name got lost long time ago. But I do know this place is filled with raw soul energy, and my body couldn't hold it. So with time I became this I suppose? I don't think I'm dead, but I don't have a body anymore.
Persy
So it magically disolved with time?
Magic Man
Yeah.
Persy
We're both adjusting to new bodies I guess. Before coming here, this application of techonology, would've been impossible my case?
Magic Man
Yeah, the field of biotechnology is already fully set up. Essentially how we create whatever it may be, needs a living soul. So all it takes is a Breathforge. It's a complicated tool, powered by a soul crystal, which syphons the reincarnation circle, and bring some souls back to life into whatever we create. In your case, you were transformed, which should not be possible.
Nesvalyn
We've come a long way when it comes impossible stuff, honestly.
Persy
Considering you have more experience and knowledge than me, why someone would do this? What would be the benefits or why the need to do that? Why I was kidnapped and make me test it?
Magic Man
I guess to see if they could do it? Perhaps they wanted to figure if you can create a Warforged without a soul crystal, as these are rare.

We notice that Balnorin is getting closer to the crystal. We try to call him but he doesn't react. Azzy and Nesvalyn goes to stop him.
Then the Magic Man teleports near Balnorin.

Magic Man
Ah, drawn by the beauty of the crystal?
Balnorin
Quite, yes.
Magic Man
It's best to not be closer, it's not really safe for corporeal beings.
Azzy
You're ok? You don't seem fine or reactive.
Balnorin
What we were up to again?
Azzy
Talking to our kind host, and probably leave soon, hopefully.
Magic Man
You're not leaving.
Nesvalyn
Is there any reason why we wouldn't?
Magic Man
It's fairly simple, you broke in. I'm keeping the automaton for research purposes, and the other ones are going to be arrested.
Persy
One last question, scientist to scientist.
Magic Man
I'm interested.
Persy
Because we're going to die, where do you keep your notes?
Magic Man
No need, I have boundless knowledge. I know everything.
Nesvalyn
That's a rookie mistake here.
Magic Man
The facility is locked down until the end of the project.
Azzy
If you were to die, would it make it easier to get out?
Magic Man
And how do you plan to kill me? Shooting me? Stabbing me?
Nesvalyn
Pretty much summed up yes, would it work?
Magic Man
I don't exist in this dimension.
Nesvalyn
In that case, it would be a shame if the Soul Crystal would be destroyed before we die.
Azzy
You're right, it would be a shame if it would take a round of this caliber.

He raises protections around the Soul crystal.

Magic Man
I am the building. Don't even try.
Nesvalyn
So destroying the building would destroy you?
Magic Man
I'm a scientist, but if you want some beef...

He grows and all the lights turn into a bright red. He then possess the giant Warforged, which takes life and starts to attack us.

Magic Man
YOU'LL GET SOME BEEF.

After Senri gives the final hit, the Magic Man starts to fade away, letting go an agonising "you... bitch...".

  1. And the players did definitively not had a gun in their face to progress after this cool fluff detail, which is easy to make the players paranoid. ↩︎
